The Best Surf Spots in Australia You Absolutely Must Discover 🏄♂️
Share
Australia, with its thousands of kilometers of coastline, is a surfer's paradise. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, the country is full of incredible spots to tame the waves. Here are my favorites, places where I felt the true essence of Australian surf culture.
1. Byron Bay (New South Wales)
Byron Bay is a classic for a reason: it’s the perfect blend of gorgeous beaches, accessible waves, and a super-friendly surf community. Whether you’re surfing at The Pass or Wategos Beach, you’ll find perfect waves and a uniquely chilled vibe. Bonus: the sunsets here are magical.
2. Snapper Rocks (Gold Coast, Queensland)
This spot is famous worldwide for its powerful and long waves. Snapper Rocks is part of the legendary Superbank, where surf pros come to train. If you want to watch talented surfers (or challenge yourself), this is the place to be.
3. Bells Beach (Victoria)
Made famous by the film Point Break , Bells Beach is a hotspot for Australian surfing. It is home to the world-renowned Rip Curl Pro every year. The waves are powerful and reserved for experienced surfers, but even as a spectator, the place is mesmerizing.
4. Noosa Heads (Sunshine Coast, Queensland)
Noosa is perfect for beginners and longboarders. With its gentle waves and idyllic beaches, it’s a place where you can progress at your own pace. The area also offers great walks in Noosa National Park, for those days when you want a break from the beach.
5. Margaret River (Western Australia)
Margaret River combines exceptional wine, spectacular scenery and world-class surf. It’s a must-see for serious surfers, with often massive waves. After a hard session, you can relax at one of the region’s many wineries.
Some Tips to Make the Most of It
- Respect the locals : Observe the priority rules and be respectful of local surfers.
- Check the conditions : Wind, tide and swell can change quickly in Australia. Check the forecast before you get in the water.
- Protect yourself from the sun : A water-resistant sunscreen is essential, as are a hat and a bottle of water.
